In November 2022, I purchased a Stinger 26RE engine which arrived with undersize sparkplug threads in the cylinder. I exchanged it under warranty for a Stinger 20RE (see my review dated 11/28/2022 under the 26RE reviews). I recently purchased another Stinger 26RE and now own Stinger 15RE, 20RE and 26RE engines, all of which have proven easy to hand start, idle well and produce the expected power output. The last two Stingers I bought from Joe each came supplied with Iridium fine wire spark plugs which have worked very well. The carburetor choke plate has some vent holes in it and the instructions say one may need to place a finger over the closed choke plate in order to initially fill/prime the dry carburetor for the first time. I found this to be true. However, with the engine mounted on the provided nylon engine mounts and attached to the firewall, there was not enough room to cover the choke with my finger. Therefore, I recommend initially priming the carburetor prior to mounting the engine. Otherwise, an electric starter is needed to spin the engine fast enough to initially prime the choked carburetor. Once wet, it performed fine and was easy to hand start. After 15 minutes of break-in running without any caulk/thread locker, the muffler screws loosened slightly, and without the clamping pressure, the muffler gasket was promptly blown out in 3 pieces. Both sides of the muffler gasket and the ends of the attaching screws need to be coated with a film of Permatex #81630 high temperature “Ultra Red” RTV Silicone Gasket Maker caulk to prevent the muffler from loosening. I suggest buying some extra exhaust gaskets, or get a roll of .030” paper/rubber gasket material from your favorite automotive parts store to make more exhaust gaskets. With the Red RTV caulk, a new gasket will be needed each time the muffler is removed/reinstalled. Blue Locktite does not work on mufflers because the high heat causes it to melt and lose its thread locking ability. I started breaking in the 26RE on a 30:1 mix of 100% gas and Lawn Boy 2 cycle oil. Hot restarts only took a single flip of the prop. Cold starts needed one flip of choke and then 3-5 flips to start. I was intrigued to see how closely the Stinger 26RE equates to the old Super Tigre ST3000 glow engines. Any plane that flew well with the ST3000 should be a great prospect for the Stinger 26RE. The ST3000 is a 30 cc engine weighing 2.93 pounds with muffler, producing 2.96 HP and will turn 18×10 Zinger prop at 7,300 rpm. The Stinger 26RE is a 26cc engine weighing 2.11 pounds including muffler and ignition module (2.35 pounds with ignition battery), rated at 3.1 HP and turned my RCGF 18×8 prop at 7,560 rpm (per the ignition driven tachometer) after 30 minutes of break-in running on Lawn Boy 30:1 gas/oil mix with no adjustments made to the factory needle settings. Performance should get even better after a couple gallons of fuel have been run through it and I switch to 40:1 Red Line gas/oil mix. What’s not to like? Got to give it 5 stars.
